Job Title: Director of Special Education
Reports To: Chief Academic Officer
Supervises: Special Education Teachers and Paraprofessionals
Contract Days: Twelve Months


JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of this position is to ensure Hogan Preparatory Academy provides a quality instructional program by managing the operation of the school program, personnel, and facilities for the benefit of the students. The special education process coordinator is in charge of the process and procedures required in the identification and service of students with disabilities. Works with principals, department heads and other team members to facilitate the integration of all students into as many classes as possible.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supervision
• Responsible for supervision of the special education process from screening through identification, IEP development, and assists in providing appropriate identification and placement of students with disabilities.
• Responsible for the implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Act, (IDEA) in accordance with district policies and procedures.
• Supervises and coordinates special education programs, policies and diagnostic procedures.
• Organize and ensure completion of all evaluation reports and IEPs.
• Coordinates and participates in IEP staffing and annual reviews and facilitates the compilation of documentation for student records.

Compliance
• Completes reviews of all special education IEP documents, ensuring compliance with District procedures, state, and federal laws; identifies areas of need within the areas of compliance and works to develop and implement programs to address those needs.
• Conducts compliance efforts of special education K-12 through age 21.
• Develops, implements and monitors procedures and programs consistent and compatible with the Administration code for Special Education, School Code and other laws and regulations.
• Initiates screening of transfer and new referral records and contacts previous school district to obtain necessary information on new students.
• Reviews transfer IEP’s and complete acceptance paperwork.
• Performs and monitors evaluation and timelines to ensure appropriate student placement and programming.



Training
• Develops, provide and promote regular in-service training to special education instructors regarding special education procedures; and regular education teachers; assists mainstream classroom teachers with inclusion facilitation
• Responsibilities include training employees; assessing needs and making recommendations; and (when needed) interviewing and making recommendations for employment of new special education staff in collaboration with the building principal

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
In addition to the below qualification, the Special Education Director must meet all qualifications and behavior standards as set by State of Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. In accordance with certification requirements and the performance expectations of the Hogan Preparatory Academy, all classroom teachers shall meet the following employment criteria:
• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Special Education
• Master’s Degree in Special Education preferred
• A valid Missouri Teacher's Certificate in Special Education. Supervisory endorsement preferred.
• 3 years + experience as a Special Education teacher
• Able to pass an extensive background check
